WHAT IS GRAY CAST IRON? The most effecting Mechanical properties of cast iron is carbon compounds. In the structure, carben is found as compaund state (cemented) or in free state (graphite). Graphite cast iron shows diversity according to graphite structure. The structure of graphite in the shape, number and size significantly affect the strength of the material. Graphite having thin layer and sharp-pointed edge, causes internal stres: in these areas fracture and cracking occurs. Due to graphite being lamellae shaped dicreases tensile strength of the existing structures for 60-100 kgf / mm ² 10-30 kgf / mm ². Also Lamellar graphite cast iron has elongation around 0-3%. In Temper cast iron, the tensile strength can reach 32-42 kgf / mm ² values with softening with backgammon.

Cast irons are iron-carbon alloys that contain more than 2% carbon in rate. Rural, Temper, White, Pied and Nodular are main types of graphite cast iron. In all of the cast iron structure generally these components are found.

Featured Spherical graphite casting irons are more economical and having high-strength than other casting irons. Nodular graphite cast irons are obtained by making sphere shape of lamellar grafites. In this process Mg and Ce are added to liquid metal with the particular proportions and methods. Some Mg based alloys also meets these requirements. But to have successful spheroidizing, raw material’s sulfur content must be reduced to around 0.02%. Nodular graphite cast iron is a most commanly used cast iron in automotive industry, because of those important features.
